"For years I've dreamed of becoming a jazz drummer who can play effortlessly in every setting. And Mark is showing me the way there!
He's guided me through the fundamentals I had been missing, helping me to play with more precision and control than I ever have in over 30 years of drumming.
Mark isn't just a fantastic musician and teacher -- he has a wealth of experience and insight to share.
The World Jazz Drumming Experience has enough material to keep me practicing for years, and Mark helps me decide what's best for me to tackle next. Through the regular class meetings, he guides me on how to improve my technique, coordination, and creativity.
And the class itself is a great community of like-minded drummers. We're dedicated to improving our playing, and it's rewarding to share progress and ideas with others on the same journey."
Ben S., Boston, MA
“Before joining Mark’s program, I struggled with playing new rhythms, especially Brazilian, and felt limited with my fluency when soloing. Mark’s immersive approach promised real results for professionals, and it truly transforms.
Now, I’m more effective and have a stronger impact on my audience. I feel deeply connected to my music, Mark’s guidance balance technical skill with personal growth, creating visible results for our listeners.
If you’re considering joining, don’t hesitate. Mark’s mentorship takes you straight to your goals in a way only someone with his expertise can.”
Carlos A. Ecuador, EC
"Despite there being tons of books on the subject, I was struggling with getting a strong foothold in Afro Cuban styles of playing. Given Mark's extensive experience playing with many of the greats in this genre, I jumped at the chance to take this class and I was not disappointed! Mark is an encyclopedia of knowledge across genres, and he has a knack for demystifying the language of multiple styles of drumming. He has proven incredibly fast at diagnosing what a student needs and coming up with exercises to "fix it" -- I've seen this both for myself as well as for others in the online class. While I focused on Afro Cuban drumming, the bonus has been getting exposure to multiple genres of music and drumming styles from across the Americas that I never would have known about, let alone come to enjoy and appreciate, had I not taken this class. In addition, Mark has exposed his class to a number of key exercises to drive technical proficiency and coordinated limb independence -- there are many exercises he has suggested that I never would have known about or tried, let alone start to apply in a musical context. Mark has been awesome in showing me the way, now I just have to put in the work!"
Ray P. Arlington, MA
"Studying with Mark provided me with a strong foundation and the confidence to succeed both at Berklee and beyond. His methodology is comprehensive and will prepare you for any challenge in the professional world. In addition to his world class knowledge and professional experience, he creates a supportive and positive learning environment. I highly recommend Mark to any drummer looking to level up their ability."
Jake R., Chicago, IL
"During my time learning from Mark, not only did I improve as a musician, but I also developed my passion for world jazz rhythms and cross-cultural musical collaboration. I wanted to deepen my understanding of Caribbean and South American rhythms and also wanted to improve my time, feel, and clarity. Studying these grooves and Mark’s exercises helped grow my vocabulary and improved my coordination and feel behind the drum set. I also began to feel more confident. It led me to many new opportunities for musical collaboration and discovery, and as I learned these rhythms, they became tools for improvisation in many musical contexts. Who would have guessed my studies of Afro-Peruvian rhythms would have helped me on a Moroccan project?!
Mark helped me deepen my feel and control, develop a process for learning an authentic language in any style, and improve my sound. The bottom line is that Mark offers a path toward self-improvement behind the drum set that is proven to work."
Sam M., Boston, MA
"I could tell that my use of Brazilian, and Cuban styles were comically simple and inauthentic. In just a short time working with Mark and this group, I can already feel an improvement. I admired Mark's playing with the Caribbean Jazz Project, and Andy Narell's various projects, and feel like I "hit the jackpot" in finding this opportunity to learn from him.
My objective is to replace the pedestrian and simple drumming that I easily fall into, with various world grooves so that the music I play becomes more interesting, inspires my band mates, and maybe even makes the boys and girls get up and dance!
Participating in The World Jazz Drumming Experience gets me closer every day to that objective."
Brooks G., Virginia Beach, VA
"I have primarily been a percussionist so I have worked more on my upper body than lower when playing. On the drumset I have used just enough technique on the bass drum to get by. Mark has given me exercises and patterns to build up my legs and feet.
Slowly, and with the aid of the Mark's instruction, I am getting more proficient with my legs and feet while concentrating on the coordination and balance of sound between the hands and feet."
